WATCH | The performers in the Chiang Mai Cabaret Show are all ladyboys, or kathoey, a third gender in Thailand
In Thailand, being a ladyboy is perceived as a third gender, called "kathoey" by locals. It is similar to Western conceptions of being transgender, but there is a different nuance to it.
"Some man is not okay with ladyboy," said Nataly, the MC of the night. Her colleagues alluded to discrimination they have felt outside of the cabaret show, in the everyday lives and at other jobs. The cabaret show itself is similar to Western conceptions of a safe space: here, the performers are free to be themselves, without judgement or fear.
