The Boy Scouts of America announced Monday that it will now allow transgender children who identify as boys to enroll in its boys-only programs.

The organization's previous policy only considered the gender listed on a child's birth certificate. Now, the program will look that the gender a child or parent lists on the application to become a scout.

A spokeswoman for Boy Scouts of America said the organization made the decision because the way gender is defined has changed.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
