President Donald Trump spoke with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto over the phone for about an hour on Friday, a White House official said.
Officials from both countries confirmed the chat, and issued a "joint statement," minus one key detail about the conversation that was left out in the US version here, but included in the Mexico version here.
Nieto’s administration said that the two leaders agreed to stop its dispute over the wall, and who is (or isn’t) paying for it in public. The Trump administration did not say this.
Mexico has taken advantage of the U.S. for long enough. Massive trade deficits & little help on the very weak border must change, NOW!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 27, 2017
Trump on Friday fired a few shots at Mexico on Twitter before the hourlong phone call.
It was a 'very good' call
The phone call comes after Nieto canceled a visit with Trump in Washington next week amid rising tensions over Trump's insistence that Mexico pay for a $12-15 billion dollar wall along the US-Mexico border.
“We had a very good call,” Mr. Trump said Friday at a news conference in Washington.
“The border is soft and weak, drugs are pouring in, and I’m not going to let that happen.”

According to the NY Times, a publication Trump took to Twitter on Saturday to bash, the two presidents agreed to allow their teams to push forward with negotiations on an array of issues, including trade, immigration and the cross-border trafficking of drugs and weapons, a White House official said.
They also agreed to leave discussions about the wall and its funding out of negotiations, the official also said. There's is no word yet on when they're scheduled to talk next.
Trump has president his squashed his beef with Mexico (for now), but his beef with the NYT?
.... yeah, not so much.
