Harambe's grandmother Josephine was euthanized Wednesday after a series of health issues, Zoo Miami announced.
Josephine, just shy of her 50th birthday, arrived at Zoo Miami in 1983. By 2017, she "could hardly move, even to reach for her favorite treat," zoo staff said.
In 1984, she gave birth to a male gorilla, Moja. Moja later fathered Harambe, the Miami Herald reported. Harambe, of course, became one of the biggest memes of 2016 after he was shot when a toddler fell into his enclosure.
Here's the zoo's full release.

People didn't exactly take it well.

2017 has been a rough year for gorillas already. Bebac, a 32-year-old gorilla at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, died January 8 after being diagnosed with heart disease.
