UPDATE Jan. 23 11:01 a.m. EST:

Former President George H.W. Bush will leave the intensive care unit today and his wife Barbara has left the hospital, doctors announced at a press conference Monday morning.

George and Barbara have been staying at Houston Methodist Hospital since Jan. 14. George is being treated for pneumonia, and Barbara was treated for bronchitis.

George has a "bad cough" but has been making "daily improvements," Dr. Clint Doerr said.

He's a really strong person. He's not your average 92-year-old.

Former President George H.W. Bush's health is improving after a stint in the intensive care unit on Wednesday, a family spokesperson said. His wife, Barbara Bush, was also admitted to a separate hospital as a precaution after "experiencing fatigue and coughing."

“The news is good all the prayers and good wishes are having a good effect,” Jim McGrath told CBS News Thursday, giving an update on the health of Bush and his wife Barbara. “They both got a good night’s sleep and are on the upswing.”

The 92-year-old former president is alert and in stable condition in the ICU, reported CNN. As for Mrs. Bush, she said she feels "a thousand percent better today."

Their progress, however, doesn't necessarily mean they are in the clear.

"They may not be out of the woods yet, but we can see the edge of the forest," the spokesperson said.

Following news that Bush 41 was admitted to Houston Methodist Hospital to address "an acute respiratory problem stemming from pneumonia," high-profile politicians and lawmakers expressed their well wishes for the family.

In his final press conference, President Obama said, "They are as fine a couple as we know and so we want to send our prayers and our love to them. Really good people."

Former president Bill Clinton tweeted his support.

President-elect Donald Trump was also thinking about the Bush family.
