WATCH | We tried aep ong-o, or pig brains, in Chiang Mai
The origin of Aep ong-o
Aep ong-o is a dish that is almost only found in the region around Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, two cities in Northern Thailand. This type of food is sometimes referred to as "Lanna food." Two of the more famous dishes are Khao Soi Curry and Norther Thai Sausage.
"Aep" refers to method by which the dish is prepared: a meat is mixed with curry paste, and then wrapped in a banana leaf and grilled over a flame.
We found the Aep ong-o Kad Luong Market, an enormous indoor and outdoor market in Chiang Mai that caters more towards locals than tourists.
WATCH | At a lakeside in restaurant in Chiang Mai, Thailand, you can order a bowl full of live shrimp. Good luck eating all of them though -- the shrimp jump, or dance, out of the bowl they are served in.
