UPDATE on Feb. 22 at 8:08pm: A former Michigan State University gymnastics doctor was charged with roughly two dozen crimes on Wednesday for sexually assaulting nine girls, affiliate WJLA reported.

According to police, Dr. Larry Nassar, 53, fondled the girls during their treatments for various injuries, which occurred at Gedderts' Twistars club in Eaton County, his Michigan State office or his home in Holt.

Parents were asked to leave the room or Nassar would obstruct their view during the girls' treatments, police added.

Original story

More than a dozen athletes filed a lawsuit against a Michigan doctor, Michigan State University, USA Gymnastics and a gymnastics club, according to CBS News.

Filed in federal court in western Michigan, the lawsuit included claims of civil rights violations, discrimination, and negligence.

Former gymnast Rachael Denhollander of Kentucky spoke publicly of her assault, which she says occurred in 2000 at the hands of  Dr. Larry Nassar whom she visited for wrist and back injuries. Denhollander said she remained silent about the assault because she thought her "voice would not be heard" against a well-regarded doctor.

Denhollander isn't the only former athlete to speak of Nassar's abuse. Eighteen women over the course of two decades came forward detailing the assault, which occurred when most of them were minors.

Nassar faces at least five lawsuits, though he has denied the allegations. He's also charged with possessing child pornography and sexually assaulting a girl at his Michigan residence.

He's currently in jail without bond.

Michigan State declined to comment but said campus police are cooperating with state and federal authorities to investigate Nassar.

USA Gymnastics has yet to comment on the matter, but it has cut ties with the doctor.
