At this point, you could be forgiven for forgetting that "Game of Thrones" was based on a book series.
But author George R.R. Martin answered a fan's question about the progress of the sixth book in the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series, "The Winds of Winter," on his blog on Tuesday. He hasn't published a book in that series since 2011's "A Dance with Dragons."
"I think it will be out this year," he wrote.
Before fans of the series get too excited, here's some important context:
- He also wrote: "I've made progress. But not as much as I hoped a year ago, when I thought to be done by now."
- He also admitted that he said in 2016 that the book would release in 2016.
- An Amazon France listing claimed the book would be released in spring 2017, but that rumor was disproven, CNET reports.
Meanwhile, "Game of Thrones" is well ahead of Martin's published work, and has deviated from the story of the books in many ways. However, the show's writers have met with Martin and "literally went through every character," the Los Angeles Times reports.
George RR Martin is me as an author. I procrastinate everything— MEGAN (@mfoers) January 10, 2017
Some fans expressed solidarity with Martin's slow writing pace.
