Brother of San Bernardino shooter pleaded guilty in immigration fraud case

The 31-year-old brother of Syed Rizwan Farook, one of the San Bernardino shooters, pleaded guilty on Tuesday in an immigration fraud case that stemmed from the investigation into the December 2015 killings, the Associated Press reported.

Syed Raheel Farook pleaded guilty in Riverside to one count of conspiracy to commit immigration fraud, the U.S. attorney's office said. If convicted on Nov. 13,  he could face up to five years in federal prison, three years of supervised released and a $250,000 fine.

Following the terrorist attack that left 14 people dead, FBI agents arrested Farook, his wife Tatiana Farook, and sister-in-law Mariya Chernykh. The charges stemmed from Chernykh's marriage to Enrique Marquez, who was charged with supplying Syed Rizwan Farook with weapons to execute the attack.

As I have said many times, we are committed to leaving no stone unturned in this investigation.

Chernykh, a Russian citizen, admitted to prosecutors that she married Marquez so she would be able to reside in the U.S. legally, even though they didn't live together and never had a nuptial ceremony.

In court documents, federal authorities said Marquez confessed to the sham while also acknowledging that he received $200 a month for the marriage.

Farook's wife and Cherrnykh are expected to go to trial on March 28.
