NBA player JR Smith and his wife announced the premature birth of their daughter

J.R. Smith of the Cleveland Cavaliers and his wife announced on social media Saturday that their daughter was born five months prematurely. “That’s why we decided to share what we’re going through with you guys. Please, keep us in your prayers and we’ll do the same for everybody else," she added. 

The couple posted the video on Uninterrupted, a platform created by Lebron James.

The couple named their third daughter Dakota. She 's five days old and weighs one pound. 


The average pregnancy can range from 38 to 42 weeks, but a premature birth occurs when a baby is born before 37 weeks, Dr. Philippe Friedlich with the Children's Hospital Los Angeles told CNN.

Dr. Anne Hansen, the medical director of the neonatal intensive care unit at Boston Children's Hospital told CNN that a child can't survive outside the womb until it's reached about 22 weeks.


Smith hasn't played basketball since he underwent surgery for a fractured right thumb. 

In the Uninterrupted video, Smith thanked fans for their support during this time off the court. 

The basketball star and his wife, Jewel Harris, announced that they were expecting in an October video.
