An Apple Watch band that tracks your blood alcohol content? You'll drink to that.

An Apple Watch band that tracks your blood alcohol content? You'll drink to that.

WATCH | "I don't even have to press a button or anything -- you can tell me if I've been drinking on the job."

No blowing needed

BACtrack, the company behind some acclaimed smartphone-connected breathalyzers, has taken its blood alcohol-detecting gadgetry even smaller -- all while notching up the smarts.

Its new Skyn band, demoed for the first time at this week's CES 2017 in Las Vegas, uses skin contact to continuously calculate a wearer's BAC, with the results appearing on their synched phone. Skyn's app will also give a notification when it notices a wearer is approaching the sobriety line.

How does it work? TAC.

How does BACtrack Skyn measure your BAC through skin contact only? Via something called TAC, or transdermal alcohol content. The amount of ethanol present on someone's skin is relative to the amount of alcohol they've consumed. That measurement informs TAC and is piped into BACtrack's algorithm to be converted and displayed in the app as a standard BAC reading (of which we all know .08 is bad).

If you don't have/want an Apple Watch, the Skyn will also come in standalone band form.

For iPhone only -- at first

When Skyn launches later this summer, at a price of $99, it'll come in Apple Watch attachment and standalone band versions. Both will be iPhone compatible to start, with Android connectivity coming later, BACtrack said.

Skyn connects to a phone by way of Bluetooth and can continuously monitor/record a wearer's alcohol consumption levels for three days on a single charge.
