On Christmas Eve, a Drexel University professor tweeted: "All I Want for Christmas is White Genocide."
That professor, George Ciccariello-Maher, was reprimanded for the tweet by the Philadelphia school but said it was satire, The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
He said that since the tweet, white supremacists have harassed him and the university.
He's made his tweets private since the incident, but here's a screengrab.
The school's reaction
In a statement, Drexel called Ciccariello-Maher's tweets "utterly reprehensible [and] deeply disturbing." A meeting was arranged between the school and the professor.
Ciccariello-Maher disapproved of the university's actions, saying it "sends a chilling message and sets a frightening precedent."
It is a figment of the racist imagination, it should be mocked, and I'm glad to have mocked it.
Ciccariello-Maher's primary defense has been that "white genocide" is a satirical concept. White supremacists pointed to interracial marriage and pro-diversity policies as evidence that the Caucasian race is under attack. His tweet was meant to highlight the absurdity of the notion.
Civil rights activists jumped to Ciccariello-Maher's defense.
Ppl really need to understand what white supremacists are saying when they use the term "White Genocide". Thats a code word for race mixing— Tariq Nasheed (@tariqnasheed) December 26, 2016
Others attempted to offer clarification.
"White genocide" is a term created by white supremacists to denote the fear of the end of white power & dominance, not literal white murder.— deray mckesson (@deray) December 27, 2016
Black Lives Matter leader DeRay McKesson chimed in.
I don't care what race you are: targeting a specific race IS racism. Targeting white people IS absolutely racist.— Black Women 4 Trump (@TallahForTrump) December 27, 2016
However, this did not stop many of Ciccariello-Maher's critics.
Some accused him of indoctrination.
And others pointed to apparent liberal hypocrisy.
Others wondered why this didn't get more coverage.
White Genocide is not a thing. White Genocide is not a thing. White Genocide is not a thing. White Genocide is not a thing. White Genocide— Mari Ojibwe📝✍🏾 📚 (@CyborgN8VMari) December 26, 2016
Still, activists insisted "white genocide" did not mean what it appeared to on the surface.
