Dozens of people were killed in Kenya after a trailer of volatile gas lost control

A runaway truck filled with a volatile gas crashed and burst into flames on a major road in Kenya, killing at least 39 people and injuring 10 more, officials said early Sunday.

The truck was heading from the capital of Nairobi to Naivasha late Saturday night. Eleven vehicles were burned in the incident.

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta said the tanker truck "should not have been on that particular road at that hour" and called for an investigation. Witnesses said the truck lost control and rammed into oncoming cars.

Kenyan officials reported 1,574 deaths in car crashes in the first half of 2016, 86 more than the first half of 2015. As Kenya's middle class continues to grow, more people are getting cars, but accidents are also on the rise.
