Almost 600 patients who were treated at a Wisconsin Veterans Affairs medical center might have been exposed to HIB and hepatitis B and C, reports CNN.
A dentist at Tomah VA Medical Center re-used his dental equipment instead of using sterilized and disposable tools like the VA requires.
An assistant recognized the breach in protocol sand reported the issue.
The VA is offering free testing and follow-up care to the 592 patients the dentist saw after being hired at the medical center in October 2015.
U.S. Speaker Paul Ryan called for the dentist to be fired in a statement.
"This news is not just heartbreaking; it's outrageous," said Ryan. "How can our veterans be treated so carelessly and where is the accountability?"
Some on social media are confused by why the dentist still has a position.
People online are asking the same question as the speaker of the House.
