eSports competitors, teams and game platforms score big at the 'Oscars' of gaming

WATCH  | Thursday night's 2016 Game Awards ceremony at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, Calif., was streamed live worldwide. Widely considered the "Oscars of gaming," this ceremony honors multiple categories within the gaming industry -- eSports included.

  • Best Player: (Coldzera)
  • Team: (Cloud9)
  • Game: (Overwatch)

Top Olympic champion Michael Phelps presented the Best Player award to Coldzera.

Gamers and streamers like Hungrybox and RotterdaM appeared on the red carpet to share their experiences with eSports, as well as thoughts for the future of gaming.

Gaming legend Hideo Kojima (known for his work with Konami on titles such as the Metal Gear series) praised competitive eSports for its ability to attract a global audience.

In some nations, like South Korea, eSport competitions draw huge crowds to see their favorite players and teams play live.

The highest honor went to "Overwatch," one of the newest, fastest-growing eSport games.

What are the Esports Industry Awards?

WATCH  | The Game Awards are one of many platforms this year to recognize the growth of eSports -- the ceremony came just days after the first-ever eSports Industry Awards.
