WATCH | Some of the most memorable characters in recent movie history almost belonged to other A-list actors.
Actor: Leonardo DiCaprio
Role: Dirk Diggler in "Boogie Nights" (1997)
DiCaprio told GQ he considered the role of porn star Dirk Diggler in "Boogie Nights," but hadn't been familiar with the work of director Paul Thomas Anderson. While DiCaprio's friend and eventual co-star Mark Wahlberg took the role, DiCaprio opted to star in another memorable movie: "Titanic."
Actor: Mark Wahlberg
Role: Jack Twist in "Brokeback Mountain" (2005)
Back in 2007, Wahlberg said he was in the running to play cowboy Jack Twist in "Brokeback Mountain," but had been "creeped out" by the script's "graphic" sex scenes. Jake Gyllenhaal accepted the role and was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance.
Actor: Anne Hathaway
Role: Tiffany in "Silver Linings Playbook" (2012)
According to Harvey Weinstein in a 2014 interview with Howard Stern, Anne Hathaway reportedly turned down the role of Tiffany in "Silver Linings Playbook" after clashing with director David O. Russell. She chose instead to do the movie "Les Misérables" and was replaced by Jennifer Lawrence.
It was a literal win/win: Hathaway and Lawrence won acting Oscars in 2013 for their performances.
Actor: Lindsay Lohan
Role: Jade in "The Hangover" (2009)
Lindsay Lohan was in the running to play the stripper Jade in "The Hangover." Todd Phillips told The Hollywood Reporter in 2013 that the 20-something actress loved the script, but wound up being "too young" for the role eventually played by Heather Graham, who was in her late 30s at the time.
Actor: Molly Ringwald
Role: Vivian Ward in "Pretty Woman" (1990)
During a 2012 Ask Me Anything session on Reddit, Molly Ringwald said she'd read an "okay" early script for "Pretty Woman," but praised the movie's eventual star, Julia Roberts, for her Oscar-nominated performance: "It was her part. Every actor hopes for a part that lets them shine like that."
