WATCH | A Purple Heart Medal was miraculously found in a Midland, Texas dumpster and now has been reclaimed by the veteran's family.
Gary Kennedy an Army Veteran; was shocked when he received a phone call from his local Veterans of Foreign Wars(VFW) chapter. They sought his help after they were notified of a box in a dumpster containing a Purple Heart Medal and several other honoree medals.
With the help of the VFW, Gary tracked down the family. Tommy Carter claimed that the medal belonged to his uncle, Jimmy C. Carter, who fought in World War II. Carter was a veteran who was awarded the Purple Heart, a prestigious medal of honor given to those wounded in combat.
The actual award with several other found military commendations.
Locating the family seemed to be difficult at first for Gary and the VFW. For starters, the Military Order of the Purple Heart does not keep a national database for recipients of the honor.
So they relied on community efforts with tips pouring in and eventually the family came forward to claim the honors. However no information has been given as to how the actual medal was thrown away into a dumpster.
