Then it struck us! Cheese would make things better. But none existed, so we made our own for a laugh.
London-based Annem Hobson has created a cheese advent calendar that's sure to make people rejoice worldwide. This is not a drill people!
Hobson, who has her own food blog "So Wrong It's Nom" came up with the idea last November after realizing she was bored with the average chocolate calendar.
Sadly, you won't be able to get your hands on one of these calendars until Christmas 2017, but Hobson posted a DIY guide to making one on her blog.
Hobson said in an email interview that she's has done extensive research to determine which cheeses are boxable and won't go bad when shipped.
"The cheese will have to be vacuum sealed so I'm eyeing up manufacturers who supply cheese to airlines, as one example," Hobson explained. "It wouldn't really work with a cheese like Brie as it's too soft and would go off pretty quick."
Hobson said the key is finding slightly harder cheeses, even though she is hoping to include as many varieties as possible.
He prototype included Vintage Gouda, St. Helen’s Farm Goats’ Cheese, Blue Stilton, German Smoked Cheese and French Doux De Montagne.
"Whilst the advent calendar may have to be refrigerated, we will work out a design for the box so that it can be hung up on the inside of the door making it easier to instantly get to," Hobson said.
Hobson is still trying to decide what cheese will be dedicated to the big day, Dec. 25. She said she considering putting a tiny jar of chutney and a cracker at the end, but we'll just have to wait and see.
So far, more than 3,200 people have said they will buy cheese advent calendar.
On top of that, Hobson said she's received fan mail from all over the world and actress Zooey Deschanel posted about the calendar on her Facebook page.
Since the cheese advent calendar won't be ready until next year, a wine advent calendar may be the solution.
Virgin Wines created an advent calendar that contains a mixture of mini bottles of red, white, Prosecco and port.
Who knows, maybe this year's wine advent calendar will pair well with next year's cheese calendar.
