The Thanksgiving traffic has begun. Here's six great apps to help with your travel.


The holiday rush has already begun! Check out this insane traffic in Los Angeles. 

If you're on the road, riding the rails, or flying the semi-friendly skies today, you're not alone -- the day before Thanksgiving is the busiest travel day of the year in the United States. But you knew that.

Put that phone to use and let these apps and web sites help you get to grandma's house (or whatever else lies over the river and through the woods) -- safely, and hopefully more quickly.


Track the real-time flight status and location of any commercial flight worldwide -- even charter or private planes. There's a GPS system that finds your exact location to spot which aircraft are nearby and finds out where they’re headed. Find out when to leave for your flight, or when to pick up the relatives at the airport.

How early do you need to get the to airport? Earlier than you think. 

Even on a "normal" travel day in the United States, the TSA recommends that you arrive 90 minutes before a scheduled departure time for a domestic flight, and two hours if you're flying internationally.

Behind the wheel? Waze is touts itself as the world's largest community-based traffic and navigation app. It compiles data from other drivers to create more accurate, real-time traffic updates.

Yahoo! Weather

Yes, Yahoo! is still a thing, and it's weather app is one of the best out there. Other than the sheer number of fellow travelers, the weather is the biggest factor in travel delays. Get ahead of the pack -- or if you're already stuck, have fun looking at the cool windmills that tell you how much the wind is howling out there.

This is the "trains" part of the planes/trains/automobiles trifecta. Trains in America are struggling because of aging infrastructure and complex track leasing deals. But an Amtrak ticket may be your best bet when the weather's truly frightful -- cars and planes grind to a halt in a blizzard, but a train can (usually) punch through the yuck.
