You can rock out and find inner peace at the same time with doom metal yoga

You can rock out and find inner peace at the same time with doom metal yoga

Watch| You would think getting into downward dog position to the sound of heavy or doom metal music might sound counterintuitive: How calming can that be? But for at least one Mystical Hug Yoga instructor in Portland, Oregon it's a natural fit.

Metal is the same - it's this very powerful music but it's also vulnerable and emotional.
Kali Giaritta- yoga instructor

The music is loud and powerful, yet slow.

“Yoga is really about finding a balance between strength and also gentleness, said Kali Giaritta, a yoga instructor at Mystical Hug Yoga in Southeast Portland.

Giaritta has a passion for music and a passion for yoga, but she looked around and didn't see anyone who was combining the two. So why death or heavy metal?

“Letting people find their stillness within the chaos of these loud rock and metal bands, I thought that was a really cool thing to try,” she said. “I've had a mix of people who are huge metal heads coming to class and people who are just interested in checking it out, and so far I haven't had anyone come and not come back.”

Matt Harmon, who has attended several classes at the yoga studio in Southeast Portland, called it one of the most powerful yoga sessions he's ever experienced.

“I love metal yoga because you can kind of move to this music, especially doom,” Harmon said. “It's so slow and drawn-out and you can find so much space in repetition,” Giaritta said getting into classic yoga poses while doom metal from such bands as Pallbearer, Sub Rosa and Sumac might not be for everyone, but those that do say it's a perfect balance between strength and gentleness.

“If somebody’s looking to try something different, even if they don’t love metal, you should come out and give it a go,” Giaritta said. “Portland metal heads are among the most peaceful, awesome people in the world.”

Here you can see some of the studio's music choices which change regularly.
