Trump canceled a meeting with The New York Times because the paper was 'not nice'

Donald Trump went on a miniature tweetstorm on Tuesday morning, condemning The New York Times and backing out of a previously announced meeting with the influential newspaper.

The Times said Trump would meet with multiple news organizations at its headquarters, a day after a harshly critical meeting with media executives. The conservative news outlet Breitbart News described the Monday meeting with the headline "Trump Eats Press."

Here are the Tuesday morning tweets, part 1 of 4.

Part 4 -- This wasn't exactly related to the Times...

The Times reportedly was not aware of the cancellation until Trump tweeted.

Trump and the media

Trump has been harshly critical of news media for his entire campaign. He has previously ditched his press pool, which the White House Correspondents Association called "unacceptable." During the campaign, he called the media "crooked" and insisted they were conspiring to help Hillary Clinton defeat him.

Even after winning the election, he insists the media is biased against him. The Times has been a particular target of his wrath -- he has repeatedly insisted they are "failing."

NYT: Trump tried to change ground rules

The Times' senior vice president for communications, Eileen Murphy, responded to Trump's tweets, saying the paper was "unaware"  of the cancellation.

"We did not change the ground rules at all and made no attempt to," she wrote. "[Trump] tried to yesterday,  asking for only a private meeting and no on-the-record segment, which we refused to agree to. We concluded... that we would go back to the original plan of a small off-the-record session and a larger on-the-record session.”

At one point, the Times flatly refuted accusations of declining subscriptions.

Trump recently implied the media was exaggerating reports of conflicts of interest.

But some pundits argued the tweet showed Trump reads the "failing" Times.
