One person was injured after protesters clashed with a white nationalist conference in DC

Protesters clashed with a white nationalist group in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, leaving one of the members of the group with a bloody gash on his head.

The National Policy Institute, a think tank that describes itself as "dedicated to the heritage, identity, and future of people of European descent in the United States," held a conference to celebrate Donald Trump's election.

The conference was held at the Ronald Reagan Building, about a block from the new Trump International Hotel.

The scene

Hundreds of protesters showed up to the conference. The protests were peaceful until two people from NPI showed up with a video camera and microphone, CNN reports. A woman from NPI asked a protester if he was a "self-hating white person." Then another protester hit the video camera, and a fight broke out as protesters yelled "Die, Nazi, die!"

The man from NPI came out of the fray with a bloody cut on his forehead. Two protesters were handcuffed by police. The rest continued to protest peacefully.

A group called Smash Racism DC called for action the day before the conference.

I love the smell of Napalm in the morning. And we just napalmed the [expletive] out of Hillary Clinton and everyone who supports her.
Gerald Martin, NPI conference speaker

More on the Institute

NPI is led by Richard Spencer, who coined the term "alt-right." His Twitter account, along with the Institute's and several other alt-right accounts, were banned in a recent crackdown on hate speech.
