You are watching the sunset over the Blue Ridge Mountains along Skyland Drive 3,680 feet high in the U.S. state of Virginia. Here at Shenandoah National Park, about two hours southwest of the Nation’s Capitol, you will discover why thousands of tourists hit the road each year hoping to catch a glimpse of the season’s richest colors.
Just as the sun slowly fades from the stones in front of you, these leaves are losing their green color. Beautiful, vibrant yellow and red leaves spreading throughout the forest like a golden wildfire. The change in color happens when a chemical response in chlorophyll breaks down due to changing daylight and cooler temperatures.
Navigate to your right and you’ll notice park visitors with cameras in hand who made the trek up a packed mountain road to snap a picture and share a moment. The surrounding buildings are part of the local lodge and a restaurant offering hot apple cider and breathtaking views.
