Airbnb unveiled a slew of new offerings Thursday at its annual Festival of Hosting in Los Angeles.
Chief among those is the fact that Airbnb hosts can now rent themselves out as tour guides using the app.
This is all part of its big new feature, Airbnb Trips.
Airbnb will keep doing its thing with short-term rentals, but it's adding other services to the mix.
You can now book "experiences" on Airbnb. These experiences are curated by local tastemakers. One such experience on the app right now in L.A. is "Adventure Man." It lasts three days, is hosted by "Quinn," and you can expect to "camp under the stars," "enjoy a fireside meal" and get surfing lessons.
All for $349.
There's also the Places feature, which is basically like a Yelp or TripAdvisor, except highly curated.
"Well-known" and "interesting locals" plot their favorite bars, restaurants, hikes and stores among other things, and you get to see their reviews.
If you're an Airbnb host, you know maintaining your place Airbnb ready can be tricky. To help make life a little easier for its hosts, Airbnb is launching "co-hosts."
It's exactly what it sounds like. Basically, other Airbnb hosts in the area can step in and do everything from managing your listing, clean it or message with guests.
Airbnb Audio Walks
Using the same Places feature, you can also access "Audio Walks" to help you explore the neighborhood you're staying in.
They're essentially audio tours, but they're only available in Downtown L.A. right now. More are in production in San Francisco, London, Paris, Tokyo and Seoul.
Expanding amid controversy
At the Festival of Hosting in L.A., where the new features were announced, housing activists and hotel workers stood outside the venue handing out flyers.
One of their main complaints, that's also shared by others in other cities, is that Airbnb is taking the much-needed housing off the long-term rental market.
In response, Airbnb insists a lot of its hosts use Airbnb as a primary source of income.
