We have never had a president like Mr. Trump in terms of his vast financial entanglements and his widespread business interests around the globe.

The top-ranking Democrat on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee called for an investigation into President-elect Donald Trump's personal finances.

Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) sent a letter on Monday calling for an investigation.

'Perception of corruption'

Cummings criticized Trump's previously stated plan to let his children run his businesses, despite their role in his campaign and transition team.

He has accused Republicans of launching investigations against President Obama and Hillary Clinton for partisan purposes.

Cummings said now that Republicans controlled the House, the Senate and the White House, it was their responsibility to ensure the government "combats even the perception of corruption."

Cummings said he also wanted to question Trump's transition team.

A consistent GOP critic

Cummings was a harsh critic of Trump and his team leading up to last week's GOP election victories.

Earlier this month, he sent a letter to Inspector General Michael Horowitz asking for an investigation into the possibility that the FBI leaked information about Clinton emails found on a computer belonging to Anthony Weiner.

He also called for an investigation into Trump's alleged ties to Russia back in August.

He said the American people "deserve" a presidency free of conflicts of interest.
