Conor McGregor made history by holding two UFC belts simultaneously

UPDATE 7:19 a.m. EST, 11/13

Conor McGregor knocked out Eddie Alvarez, becoming the first mixed-martial artist to simultaneously hold two UFC belts.

Mixed Martial Arts competitions were banned in New York in the late '90s. But tonight, MMA returns to the Empire State.

Tonight, the Ultimate Fighting Championship will stage UFC 205 at one of the world's most famous venues, Madison Square Garden. And to celebrate their return, they've put together what UFC President Dana White has described as the promotion's "biggest card ever."

Here's a small preview of the action, which includes three title matches. The show kicks off at 8 p.m. EST, but the most exciting fights begin at 10.

Steven Thompson v. Tyron Woodley

While this fight won't seem too exciting for the uninitiated, Thompson v. Woodley is an interesting matchup.

Fighting out of South Carolina, Thompson is a champion  kick boxer who can use his legs just as well as his arms. Woodley was an amateur wrestler and is the current welterweight champion of the UFC. How did he win that? Well it took him all of two minutes and basically one punch.

This fight will surely not disappoint. Both men know how to pick punches and finish fights.

Woodley (on the left) and Thompson (on the right) have been much more respectful in the buildup to their match than some of the other fighters on the main card of UFC 205...

Joanna Jdrzejczyk v. Karolina Kowalkiewicz

If Conor McGregor has been the king of trash talk in the run-up to UFC 205, Jdrzejczyk has certainly been its queen. She's the women's strawweight champion of the UFC, she's undefeated, and has made sure no one forgets either fact.

Including her opponent tonight, Karolina Kowalkiewicz. The two Poles have been all over each other at press conferences, chance meetings in parking garages, and the weigh-in.

What many people might not know is that these two fighters have actually fought before, with Jdrzejczyk coming out on top in the amateur match way back in March 2012.

Jdrzejczyk won that fight by submission. But since then, she's developed into one of the most feared finishers in the UFC.

Based on how the two fighters have acted towards each other, both will surely want to win by KO.

Jdrzejczyk has been active on social media, promoting her match against Kowalkiewicz.

Conor McGregor v. Eddie Alvarez

Finally, the big one.

If there's one man in the fight game today who knows how to sell a bout, it's McGregor. "Mystic Mac" has one of the most active mouths of anyone in combat sports, and he's been compared to legendary boxer Muhammed Ali in that regard.

Normally, McGregor rolls right over his opponents, both in terms of trash-talk and ability. He's already featherweight champion, but looking to add the lightweight belt to his collection.

If he's successful, it will be the first time in the UFC's history that a fighter has held two belts at two weights. And that seems to have been his primary focus in the months leading up to this contest.

Making history.

Well that, and Philly native Eddie Alvarez.

Alvarez is the lightweight champion of the UFC for good reason. There are few fighters more ready to grind wins out both by striking and grappling.

But perhaps his most impressive accomplishment in the lead up to his fight with McGregor is that he's been able to actually been able to keep up in terms of talk.

Regardless of who comes out on top, it's sure to be a fight for the ages.

Support from all over the world is pouring in for both fighters.

And all sorts of people are tuning in.
