Prince Harry blasted the British press after racist coverage of girlfriend Meghan Markle

The British royal family released a statement condemning racist press coverage.

Why this matters

Prince Harry's girlfriend is Meghan Markle, an actress (best known for the drama "Suits") and activist. Her mother is African-American and her father is Dutch and Irish.

Her heritage has drawn harsh, often racially charged criticism from British tabloids.

The Daily Mail called her "almost straight outta Compton" and implied she wasn't British enough. The Sun expressed surprise the prince would fall for a "brunette."

Prince Harry is worried about Ms. Markle's safety and is deeply disappointed he has not been able to protect her.
Royal family statement

The royal family's statement said "a line has been crossed."

The fact that a statement was released at all was unusual for the family, as the release itself acknowledged.

Many have jumped to the couple's defense.

Some called the statement itself "possibly [the] most important" from the family.

Others saw silver lining in the outpouring of hatred.

But some didn't think the Prince's actions were anything special.
