A mother and her two children died on Halloween when a vehicle struck a flat-bed trailer that was carrying trick-or-treaters in Chunky, Mississippi, according to CBS News.
Kristina Shaver and her daughters 8-year-old, Baylie, and 2-year-old, Brooke, were killed in the wreck.
Sgt. Andy West with Mississippi Highway Patrol told The Clarion-Ledger a Ford F-150 pickup driving along Highway 80 struck the trailer from behind around 7:45 p.m.
Shaver and her daughters died on the scene.
Seven other victims were transported to two different hospitals, one 15 miles east and another 80 miles west. Some of the victims had life-threatening injuries.
"It was just chaos," Newton County Coroner Danny Shoemaker told CBS News, describing the scene.
Authorities said the trailer full of trick-or-treaters was being pulled by a Jeep driven by 58-year-old Terry Smith.
"It would be inappropriate for us to speculate why the driver drove into the rear of that trailer, and we want to refrain from making any statements until the investigation is complete," West told The Clarion-Ledger.
Authorities are still reviewing potential charges for the driver of the pickup, 20-year-old Chase Cook. So far, no charges have been filed.
