Pro tip: If your Halloween costume portrays you as another race, maybe... don't.
Really, just don't
Hilary Duff, the actress you mostly remember from "Lizzie Maguire," turned heads when she dressed as a sexy pilgrim with her boyfriend, trainer Jason Walsh, as a Native American, complete with face paint and a headdress.
This did not go well.
I'd bet my life that Hilary Duff ~meant~ no harm; she just exists in a bubble of white privilege, and ~that~ does harm— @PiaGlenn (@PiaGlenn) October 30, 2016
so we talk about it
Some were diplomatic in their criticism.
Others were more blunt.
Hillary Duff joins the ranks of T Swift and Amy Schumer in the "most tone deaf to privilege and racism" competition.— Nat My President (@NatPurser) October 30, 2016
Others were even more blunt.
I can't believe Hilary Duff looked at her boyfriend and thought "yes this costume is perfect and not offensive."— noahilistic (@NOAHKEEN) October 29, 2016
You get the idea.
Others were only offended by the outrage."Grow up"
I am SO sorry to people I offended with my costume. It was not properly thought through and I am truly, from the bottom of my ❤️sorry.— Hilary Duff (@HilaryDuff) October 30, 2016
Duff apologized on Sunday for the costume.
So did Walsh.
