The DoJ warned James Comey not to go public with the new Clinton emails. He did anyway.

The Justice Department discouraged FBI Director James Comey from notifying Congress that more emails had been found that may have been tied to the Hillary Clinton email investigation. He sent the notification anyway.

An anonymous official told The Associated Press notifying congress so close to Election Day could produce dangerous public fallout as it would be perceived as interfering with the election.

Comey sent the notification anyway, angering Clinton's team and giving Donald Trump new fuel for his struggling campaign.

"Now it's reported that the Department of Justice is fighting with the FBI. That's because the Department of Justice is trying their hardest to protect the criminal activity of Hillary Clinton," Trump said at a rally in Phoenix on Saturday. He had no evidence to support this claim.

It's not clear if the emails will have any significance to the Clinton email investigation, or how long it will take agents to come up with any conclusions. Comey could not guarantee results would arrive before the election.

We don't ordinarily tell Congress about ongoing investigations, but here I feel an obligation to do so...

CNN reports the FBI has a practice of not commenting publicly about politically sensitive investigations within 60 days of an election.

The new emails were originally uncovered as the FBI investigated Anthony Weiner, who has been accused of sending dirty texts to a 15-year-old girl. Weiner is the estranged husband of top Clinton aide Huma Abedin.

The Clinton campaign has called on the FBI to release the "full and complete facts," while the Donald Trump campaign has used this as evidence of Clinton's corruption, calling the email server an attempt to cover up "criminal behavior." Comey has said Clinton did not break any laws.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
