Multiple pedestrians were struck by a vehicle after a NASCAR race in Virginia

At least 22 people were injured Sunday after being hit by a car in the parking lot of Martinsville Speedway in Martinsville, Virgina, according to state police.

Emergency crews said a fan leaving the NASCAR race drove into a group of people near a helicopter pad around 5:30 p.m.

It is unclear whether this was accidental or not.

State police said the parking lot was congested when a Chevy convertible tried to pass a Jeep, but ended up hitting the Jeep and multiple pedestrians in its path.

Authorities noted that the man driving the convertible was taken into custody.

State police said the majority of those injured were treated at the scene. The victims range in age from 13 to 65.

Seven people were reportedly taken to Memorial Hospital in Martinsville. Two others were taken to Morehead Memorial Hospital in Eden, North Carolina.

Emergency crew said no one had to be airlifted from the scene.

Police said alcohol doesn't appear to have been a factor in the crash.
