A political organization run by Gov. Terry McAuliffe donated $467,500 (plus about $208,000 in mailer support) to the Virginia Senate campaign of Dr. Jill McCabe in 2015.
McAuliffe is a vocal Hillary Clinton ally. McCabe is the wife of Andrew McCabe, Deputy Director of the FBI, The Wall Street Journal reports.
That's more than one-third of Jill McCabe's campaign funds overall. She still lost to incumbent Republican Dick Black.
Once I decided to run, my husband had no formal role in my campaign other than to be a supportive husband to me and our children.
The FBI said in a statement that Andrew McCabe "played no role" in the campaign and was not involved in investigating Clinton's private server emails until his promotion to deputy director, months after his wife's campaign had ended.
McAuliffe has been a stalwart Clinton supporter since the 1990s, the Journal reports. He's currently under investigation by the FBI over donations made by Chinese businessman Wang Wenliang, who has his own ties to the Clinton Foundation.
Some social media observers decried the media's reaction to the case.
But Clinton critics jumped on it.
