The Battle for Mosul

ISIS rounded up and executed 284 villagers as Iraqi-led coalition forces closed in on Mosul, an Iraqi intelligence source told CNN.

Those killed Thursday and Friday were men and boys used to shield against attacks forcing ISIS out of southern parts of Mosul, the source said.

CNN could not independently confirm the killings.

Sources told CNN the victims were all shot, killed and then dumped into a mass grave.

Here's the latest on Mosul:

  • The Iraqi army launched a large offensive early Saturday to retake Hamdaniya
  • At least 500 families have been taken hostage
  • One American was killed in the effort to push the ISIS forces out of Mosul

CNN contributed to this report.
