Original Story

More than 100 Haitian prisoners kept in a facility in Arcahaie have escaped its confines after clashing with guards after being let out of a bathing pen, reports the Washington Post

At least one guard was killed and others were reported wounded.

The authorities say that prisoners stole a number of weapons and exchanged gunfire with guards before escaping, mostly barefoot, into the town.

Police are asking residents in the area to follow instructions as the authorities ramp up efforts to recapture the inmates.

The U.S. Embassy in Haiti has advised all Americans in the country to avoid the area.

The prison appears to now be mostly empty.

Some say the number of escaped prisoners is closer to 200.
