The first 5G chip for phones was announced Monday

You've probably just gotten comfortable with your 4G wireless access. But tech companies have been hard at work on the next generation of mobile networks, and now the first 5G-ready chip is here.

Qualcomm announced its Snapdragon X50 modem would allow phones to access the 5G network, even though that network is still in its infancy, CNET reports.

When 5G fully arrives, it's expected to be 100 times faster than our current networks, and even 10 times faster than Google Fiber.

How do you get this ASAP? Move to South Korea. 5G is expected to play a part in the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang

What's the downside?

5G networks will be tricky to set up, since they have much shorter range than 4G and the signal has trouble navigating around corners and through walls.

But we know it's significantly faster. Think in terms of gigabits per second, rather than the megabits per second we're currently used to.

And, of course, this won't be the last we hear from Qualcomm about 5G.

And this could be good news for self-driving cars.

How excited are you for 5G?
