Melania Trump told CNN her husband, Donald Trump, was "egged on" by Billy Bush in the taped interview from 2005 where he made lewd comments about women.
She called the Republican presidential nominee's remarks "boy talk."
Melania Trump added that she wonders whether her husband and the "Access Hollywood" host even knew the mic was on.
"I said to my husband that, you know, the language was inappropriate. It's not acceptable. And I was surprised because that is not the man that I know," Melania Trump told CNN's Anderson Cooper in an exclusive interview.
The interview, which is set to air on CNN at 8 p.m. ET Monday, is the first time Melania Trump had defended her husband on-camera since the tape was published by the Washington Post.
Since the tapes were published, multiple women have come forward accusing him of sexual misconduct.
Donald Trump, however, has denied those accusations.
Melania Trump emphasized in her interview with CNN that she had never heard her husband use that kind of language before.
"No. No, that's why I was surprised, because I said like I don't know that person that would talk that way, and that he would say that kind of stuff in private," she told CNN.
Melania Trump has kept a much lower public profile since the race for the White House kicked into high gear.
In the past, she reportedly urged her husband to be "more presidential."
