The Nigerian president said his wife's place is in the kitchen

Amid reports that his wife does not support his re-election, Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari said during a press conference in Berlin (alongside German Chancellor Angela Merkel) that the Nigerian first lady's place is in the kitchen.

"I don't know which party my wife belongs to but she belongs to my kitchen and my living room and the other room," said the president.

Nigeria's first lady has openly questioned her husband's work and said she may not support him if he runs again — comments that President Muhammadu Buhari laughed off, saying, "I don't know which party my wife belongs to, but she belongs to my kitchen and my living room and the other room." ?(AP Photo/Azeez Akunleyan )

Buhari's wife, Aisha, is a businesswoman and an activist who in the past has said she will only support her husband's re-election if he does not change his governing style.

Presidential spokesman Garba Shehu tweeted out in defense of the president's comments.

However, many critics online won't take Buhari's comments as simple banter.
