A Russian official called claims Russia hacked US elections 'flattering' but 'ridiculous'

Everybody in the United States is saying that it is Russia which is running the [US] presidential election. We have not seen a single fact...
Sergey Lavrov

Russia's foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov, told CNN on Tuesday the claims that Russia is trying to influence the U.S. presidential elections are "flattering" but "ridiculous."

On Friday, the U.S. government officially attributed multiple email hacks to Russia.

Coordination with hacked emails

White House press secretary Josh Earnest said America's response to Russia would be "proportional," but did not clarify  what that would entail, CNN reports.

Democratic Party officials have accused Russia of coordinating the release of hacked DNC emails to benefit Donald Trump, who has expressed admiration for Russian president Vladimir Putin.

Lavrov seemed to welcome any response.

Some remembered the "ridiculous" comment in a different light.

WATCH  | Trump also has used a false Russian news story to bash Hillary Clinton. One story quoted a Hillary Clinton aide as making comments about the Benghazi attack, but it actually selectively quoted a news article the aide had emailed. (Skip to 13:25 above.)
