The end of an era: BlackBerry is done making smartphones

RIP BlackBerry (1996-2016) ?

After posting a $372 million quarterly loss, Blackberry said it will no longer make smartphones.

Instead, the Canadian tech firm said it will outsource all hardware development to focus on software.

So, while it's not the end of BlackBerry phones, the company itself won't be making them.

BlackBerry confirmed the announcement on Twitter.

"We are focusing on software development, including security and applications," BlackBerry CEO John Chen said in a statement.

"The company plans to end all internal hardware development and will outsource that function to partners."

Although BlackBerry was never able to compete with Apple, BlackBerry still has its fare share of loyal customers.

But of course, you can't talk about BlackBerry without mentioning the Blackberry queen.

Earlier this year, Kim Kardashian mourned the death of her BlackBerry on Twitter.

The "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" star went on a Twitter rant...

...trying to decide if she should buy a different phone since all Bolds were sold out.

BlackBerry came to the star's rescue and promised to help replace her phone.
