ADVANCE FOR SATURDAY, OCT. 1 - In this April 24, 2007, file photo, Boston Red Sox's David Ortiz walks back to the dugout after striking out against the Toronto Blue Jays in the ninth inning of their baseball game at Fenway Park in Boston. The Mariners traded him. The Twins released him. And even the Boston fans gave up on David Ortiz a couple of times, too, after he struggled to start the spring or limped away before the season was over. But when this Red Sox season is over and Ortiz's career ends along with it, it will be by his choice and playing as well as he ever has. (AP Photo/Elise Amendola, File)

Massachusetts lawmakers are trying to name a bridge in honor of David Ortiz

Brookline Avenue Bridge is so 2015. How about David Ortiz Bridge? Now that's a name Bostonian can be proud of.

At least, that's what state lawmakers seem to think. Officials are moving to name the bridge in honor of the Red Sox slugger, who will be retiring at the end of the season.

The bridge in questions spans the Massachusetts Turnpike between Landsdowne Street and Newbury Street, near Fenway Park.

Lawmakers say the honor would recognize his accomplishments on and off the field. They note his charitable work on behalf of children in New England and his native Dominican Republic and his efforts after the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing to help the city heal.

The House passed the bill during an informal session on Thursday. The bill now goes to the Senate.

Ortiz is beloved by many in Boston. And many are sad to see him go.

Well. Almost everyone.
