Jose Fernandez was almost a sure thing while pitching at home, such was his talent.
That's why the Miami Marlins pushed his start this week back from Sunday away against the Atlanta Braves, to tonight at home against the Mets. Sadly, Fernandez won't get the chance to pitch tonight. He died Sunday morning in a boating accident.
However, his No. 16 jersey will be on the field tonight. Every Marlins player will wear Fernandez's number in a tribute to their late teammate, reports the Miami Herald.
Miami authorities have also revealed the identities of the other two men who died in the boating accident with Fernandez on Sunday morning. Emilio Macias, 27, and Eduardo Riveria, 25, were also aboard the 32-foot SeaVee that crashed into a jetty off of Miami Beach around 3:15 a.m.
No one knows who was in control of the boat at the time of the crash. The boat did not belong to Fernandez. There was no indication drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash.
On avg, more home fans turned out to watch Jose Fernandez pitch than any other ML starter. In that market, especially, that says something.— Tony Massarotti (@TonyMassarotti) September 26, 2016
Many online have taken to Twitter to remember the young pitcher.
Some Twitter users are even calling for Fernandez to win the Cy Young award for best pitcher.
In any case, many believe some sort of honor is in order.
