We're now entering a new era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, in which major advances in every field will be driven by data.
Microsoft announced a plan to switch to 50 percent renewable energy by 2018 last week.
The tech giant already runs on 44 percent renewable energy, but promised to go even further in the 2020s in a blog post on Wednesday.
Microsoft's Rob Bernard, wrote that cloud-based technologies were used in environmentally friendly projects.
But he added that tech companies were obligated to make a "responsible cloud." That included the previously announced plan to bring 20 megawatts of solar energy to Virginia in 2016.
Bernard also wrote that Microsoft's research into new battery technology could be used to store energy and improve efficiency around the world.
