Microsoft's Rob Bernard, wrote that cloud-based technologies were used in environmentally friendly projects.

But he added that tech companies were obligated to make a "responsible cloud." That included the previously announced plan to bring 20 megawatts of solar energy to Virginia in 2016.

Bernard also wrote that Microsoft's research into new battery technology could be used to store energy and improve efficiency around the world.
