Ashley Niels' 12-year-old husky mix Spunky was recently diagnosed with an incurable form of cancer. Knowing he could be gone any day, Niels followed up on a promise she made to him years ago. She made it snow for Spunky.
Niels adopted Spunky when she lived in Wisconsin. When they moved to Texas 8 years ago, she promised her snow-loving pup that he would see snow again one day.
When Spunky woke up one day and didn't want to eat, Niels knew something was wrong. After a visit to the vet she learned Spunky had a type of incurable cancer. The day came to put him to sleep, but Niels cancelled because he was doing so well.
Not wanting to break her promise, she found a snow machine that creates bubbles that resemble snow and threw Spunky a snow party.
I know he felt all the love that went into making this moment happen ... I know he's felt all the well wishes, prayers and hope sent his way.
Niels was able to make this happen with some financial help of friends and volunteers at the Austin Animal Center where she works as a behavior and enrichment specialist.
The center kept the machine around so the adoptable dogs could enjoy a snow day as well, resulting in some seriously adorable pictures.
Spunky has been doing surprisingly well since his diagnosis but may go any day. Here's to a pup's last hurrah.
