Jim Carrey has responded to lawsuit that said he was involved in his ex's death

Actor Jim Carrey was sued Monday by his late girlfriend, Cathriona White's estranged husband.

The lawsuit was filed in Los Angeles by Mark Burton, who was married to White at the time of her death, even though she was in a relationship with Carrey.

White was found dead in a Sherman Oaks, California, home on Sept. 28, 2015. The Los Angeles County coroner's office later ruled that she committed suicide by overdosing on a combination of Ambien, Propranol and Percocet.

The lawsuit claims Carrey violated California's Drug Dealer Liability Act, which allows people to file civil claims against dealers who caused harm by distributing illegal drugs.

Burton's lawsuit claims Carrey illegally obtained drugs under the false name "Arthur King" and gave them to White, which she, in turn, used to kill herself, according to People magazine.

The lawsuit claims he did it despite knowing White was "prone to depression and had previously attempted to take her own life."

I will not tolerate this heartless attempt to exploit me or the woman I loved...I really hope ... people will stop trying to profit from this.
Jim Carrey, in a statement

Carrey responded to the lawsuit in a statement sent to USA Today, calling it a "heartless attempt to exploit [him]."

The lawsuit also alleges Carrey attempted to cover up his involvement in her death.

Burton alleges that Carrey sent a "bogus" text message to White on Sept. 27 after she was already dead, according to a USA Today report.

He added that Carrey's offer to pay for White's funeral expenses was just an effort to paint himself as the "grieving good guy."

Burton's suit also claims Carrey never actually helped with the funeral expenses.

Burton's lawyer told People magazine that they are asking the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office to launch an investigation into White's death.

The lawsuit does not detail how much money Burton is seeking.
