Charmian Carr who played Liesl in 'The Sound of Music' has died


Charmian Carr, who is best known for her role as Liesl on "The Sound of Music," died Saturday at the age of 73. 

Carr's spokesman told The Guardian she died in Los Angeles of complications from a rare form of dementia. 

The actress was well known for her role the Rodgers and Hammerstein's 1965 film where she performed "Sixteen Going on Seventeen," one of the classic songs from "The Sound of Music."

"Charmian Carr played the oldest Von Trapp child, and in some ways she maintained that role in real life - guiding, cheering, supporting and generally being there for the rest of her 'sisters' and 'brothers.' " Ted Chapin, president of the Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization, said in a statement.

Kym Karath, who played the youngest Von Trapp child, Gretl, tweeted calling Carr "exquisite."

Carr left the movie business after "The Sound of Music," and went on to start an interior design business. According to CNN, one of her clients was Michael Jackson. 

"The Sound of Music" won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
