A California college put up nearly 3,000 flags for 9/11. They were trashed in protest.

Occidental College students put up one American flag on Saturday night for each life lost on  9/11: exactly 2,997.

They were all removed, destroyed and trashed by midnight. Vandals had put up posters and flyers that "shamed the victims of 9/11," according to the Occidental College Republican Club.

College officials said they were not sure who was responsible for the vandalism, but would investigate and take "appropriate disciplinary action,"  CBS Los Angeles reports.

Here's the scene of the vandalism.

The "victim-shaming" posters mention the death toll for Middle Eastern wars.

Here's the excerpt of the statement the school tweeted on Monday.

The college's Republicans Club's president appeared on "Fox and Friends" on Tuesday.
