ISIS spokesman Mohammad al-Adnani was killed while inspecting military operations around Aleppo, Syria, according to CNN.
"Shaykh Abu Muhammad al-Adnani, the spokesman of the Islamic State, was martyred while surveying the operations to repel the military campaigns in Aleppo," Amaq, ISIS' news agency wrote in a news release Tuesday.
According to CNN, al-Adnani's death is the highest-profile killing among the terror group.
Al-Adnani, a senior leader in the terrorist group, has been the voice of ISIS over the past few years.
He has released numerous, lengthy audio files online. The New York Times reported that he hand-selected the gruesome ISIS execution videos that have circulated the internet.
Al-Adnani was also known for delivering fiery sermons to carry out attacks. In September 2014, he encouraged Islamists to kill Europeans by any means necessary, according to Fox News.
In his last speech, al-Adnani said attacks against civilians in Western countries are "dearer and better" than military advancement, according to SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors ISIS.
