The FBI found evidence that foreign hackers broke into state election systems and stole voter registration data, according to Yahoo! News.
An internal FBI memo was leaked that showed two IP addresses had been compromised in July and August. It didn't identify what states were affected or how much data was stolen, but unnamed sources told Yahoo that Arizona and Illinois were affected. Illinois had to shut down its voter registration system for 10 days in July.
It was an eye opener. We believe it's kind of serious, and we're investigating.
Based on the tone of the officials interviewed, the hack might be a worrying sign.
"This is big deal," Rich Barger, chief intelligence officer for ThreatConnect, told Yahoo News. "This certainly should be concerning to the common American voter."
Foreign hackers have been involved in this election cycle, most notably when the Democratic National Committee said it was hit by Russian hackers.
Julian Assange, head of WikiLeaks, would not reveal whether Russia was involved in that hack.
