You know that moment when real life imitates something in the movies, instead of the other way round? Well, a team of scientists and explorers had a moment like that recently while scanning the ocean floor in Southern California and found an incredibly cute purple sea creature.
The scientists are part of the Exploration Vessel Nautilus, a well-known research vessel on a global mission of sea exploration. The scientists captured the bright purple, googly-eyed stubby squid using a camera on a remote-operated vehicle (ROV).
"It looks so fake," said one member of the Nautilus' team.
"He has weird eyes!" said one scientist. "Get close! Get close!" said another, referring to the camera.
The creature which is only six centimeters long looks like a unique combination of a squid and an octopus.
The adorable cephalopod could be biologically significant too, the creature could be a new species that we're finding for the first time, said cephalopod expert Michael Vecchione of the Smithsonian Institution, in an email to the Associated Press.
