We wanted to make clear that a person can use facilities that match their gender identity, and we think that's a good thing.
The Obama administration will announce this week that all federal facilities must allow transgender people to use the bathroom that corresponds with their gender identity.
That will apply to 9,200 properties and about 1 million people, BuzzFeed News reports. But it won;t include the White House or Capitol building.
That policy will also apply to visitors, according to General Services Administration spokeswoman Ashley Nash-Hahn.
While similar policies have been backed by the Office of Personnel Management, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the Justice Department, some states have resisted allowing transgender people to use bathrooms that match their gender identity.
But 24 states have sued the Obama administration, calling this policy an overreach, Politico reports.
Obama was praised for the move on Twitter by some users.
